I love getting requests, they sometimes help aid ideas I already had and throw a new twist into the look or give me a whole new idea altogether. One thing I’ve noticed over the years is people often forget that a tutorial doesn’t have to be used only for what the title says. What I mean by this is that I get requests all the time for a “birthday” look, or maybe a “date night” tutorial, or even “back to school”. Lately with Lady Gaga’s new video I get a minimum of 20 requests a day just in my email alone to do the skull makeup she wore in the video. That’s cool, but I did a skull mask in 2008 that I’m more than happy with how it turned out so I’m not going to redo it. Just because the title doesn’t (or didn’t) say “Lady Gaga Skull tutorial” doesn’t mean you can’t use it. You can honestly use any skull mask tutorial from YouTube and get similar results.
Going back to the original topic of this post, when it comes to the type of tutorials previously mentioned I always refuse to do them. The reason I refuse is because what everyone wants to wear for their birthday, a date, school, or any event similar to those is different. I went out for my birthday in full on head to toe drag, not everyone wants to do that, and some people don’t even want to wear anything other than eyeliner and lip gloss on theirs. Just because the title doesn’t say “birthday tutorial” doesn’t mean you can’t use it for that! If you want to wear a blue eye shadow, just search for “blue eyeshadow tutorial” either on youtube or your favorite guru’s channel, then dig through the results. If you don’t find anything you like, take elements from multiple videos and create your own look. It’s only makeup, it washes off so you’re allowed to experiment and have fun with it!
Using YouTube’s search feature on a person’s channel helps a ton when you’re looking for something specific. I notice quite a few people don’t use it, which is why a lot of us who do videos get requests for things we’ve already done. Sometimes we did the same video more than once and still get requests for it. To help with this, one thing I try to do for all of my videos is tag them with colors used (blue, green, orange, pink, etc.) so if you’re looking for a specific color you can search and see all the videos I did using that 1 color. I know it is like this for all of my old videos because I went through and changed the tags on all of my videos from 2008-2010. The same goes for my other tags for more dramatic looks, my neutral tutorials, and drag videos.
Just remember, do a little detective work and search before you ask. We try our best to answer most of the questions we know we’ll get before they’re even asked to help keep all questions to a minimum. This mainly helps us reply faster to those who ask something that isn’t already answered or doesn’t already have a video. If after looking for an answer you still don’t see one, ask!!
One last thing! For questions that aren’t related to a tutorial, make sure you check the person’s FAQ section either on their website or their YouTube channel, lots of helpful information can be found in those as well!
